  1. Vacuum and pipe collapse
  2. Flow reduction and water hammer
  3. Installation practice

In water transfer lines, trapped air at high points or vacuum during draining can impair network performance. Air release and check valves are essential design elements — not optional accessories.

Vacuum and pipe collapse

On descending profiles, rapid pump shutdown without a check valve can create negative pressure and inward deflection of the pipe wall. With PE100 and thinner walls, air/vacuum protection becomes more critical.

Flow reduction and water hammer

Air pockets at line peaks reduce effective flow area, cut delivered flow and can contribute to transient pressure events.

Installation practice

  • Mount air valves vertically at high points
  • Typical spacing near 600 m on long horizontal runs (project-specific)
  • Inspect and service valves periodically (e.g. every six months)
